How Netrunning Works in Cyberpunk RED
Complete guide to Netrunning in Cyberpunk RED. Learn about the NET Architecture, ICE, programs, and how to hack in the Time of the Red.
Overview
After the DataKrash destroyed the old NET, Netrunning in the Time of the Red is local and dangerous. Netrunners must physically approach their targets and jack in directly, making it a high-risk, high-reward profession.
The New NET
The global NET is dead, poisoned by Rache Bartmoss's DataKrash. What remains are isolated Architecture nodes that must be accessed locally. Netrunners need to be within 6 meters of an access point to jack in, making them vulnerable while they work.
NET Architecture
Each system is represented as floors of an Architecture. You start at the lobby and must move deeper to reach valuable data. Each floor may contain Black ICE (attack programs), demons (rogue AIs), files, or controls. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes.
Your Cyberdeck
Your cyberdeck determines how many programs you can run and your hardware stats. Programs are your weapons and tools in the NET - attackers to fight ICE, defenders to protect yourself, and utilities to accomplish objectives. A good deck setup is essential.
Combat in the NET
NET combat uses Interface + REZ (your deck's processing power) against the ICE's stats. Taking damage in the NET causes real brain damage. If you die in the NET, you die in meatspace. Always have an escape plan.
Common Netrunning Actions
Jack In/Out (connect to Architecture), Slide (move between floors), Activate Program (use a program), Scanner (find hidden nodes), Backdoor (bypass security), Control (activate system controls), Cloak (hide from ICE). Each action takes one NET turn while your body sits vulnerable.
Quick Tips
- Never go alone - have someone guard your body while you're jacked in
- Scout the Architecture before going deep
- Always have Zap (basic attack) and Armor (basic defense) programs slotted
- Know when to jack out - a dead Netrunner finds nothing
