Skill
Skill
Also known as: ability, proficiency, talent
Definition
A learned capability representing training or experience in a specific area, like Stealth, Persuasion, or Medicine. Skills usually combine with attributes to determine success.
How it works in different systems
D&D 5e: 18 skills tied to abilities. Proficiency adds +2 to +6 based on level.
Vampire V5: Skills rated 0-5 dots. Roll Attribute + Skill as dice pool.
Call of Cthulhu 7e: ~70 skills as percentages. Roll d100 under your skill% to succeed.
Powered by the Apocalypse: No skill list - fictional positioning and moves determine what you can do.
Example
“Your rogue has +7 to Stealth (DEX modifier +4, proficiency bonus +3). When sneaking past guards, you roll d20+7 against the guards' passive Perception.”
Common Mistakes
- Thinking you can't attempt skills you're not trained in (usually you can, just without bonuses)
- Forgetting which attribute a skill uses
- Not asking to use a different attribute when it makes sense ('Can I use Intimidation with Strength?')
