APP (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)

Characteristics

Definition

Appearance represents your investigator's physical attractiveness, personal presence, and the impression you make on others. It encompasses not just physical beauty but also grooming, bearing, charisma, and that intangible quality that draws attention. In Call of Cthulhu, APP is rolled on 3d6×5 and primarily affects social interactions. While it doesn't directly modify social skill rolls mechanically, it shapes how NPCs initially perceive and respond to your investigator. In the class-conscious 1920s, appearance carries significant social weight—first impressions matter in gentlemen's clubs, police stations, and when knocking on strangers' doors during investigations.

How it works

**Generation**: Roll 3d6×5 (range 15-90) **Derived Stats**: APP doesn't directly derive other stats, but influences social dynamics **Hard/Extreme**: APP÷2 and APP÷5 for difficulty levels **Uses**: First impressions, social standing assessments, and the Keeper may use APP to determine NPC reactions and willingness to cooperate

Tips

**When APP Matters**: APP supports social investigation—making contacts, interviewing witnesses, and gaining trust. It's most valuable for the group's social face. **Roleplay Tool**: APP provides strong hooks for character description and social roleplay. High or low APP creates memorable character moments.

Frequently asked questions

Does APP modify social skill rolls?

Not directly in the rules, but many Keepers grant bonus or penalty dice for social rolls when APP is exceptionally high or low and the situation warrants it. It's primarily a roleplay and narrative characteristic.

Is APP a dump stat?

APP is less mechanically impactful than STR or DEX, but it matters for social investigators. If your character relies on Charm, Persuade, or other social skills, decent APP supports that narrative. It's less critical for combat-focused investigators.
