EDU (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)

Characteristics

Definition

Education represents your investigator's accumulated knowledge from formal schooling, self-study, and life experience. It's a measure of what you've learned over your lifetime, covering both academic education and practical knowledge gained through experience. In Call of Cthulhu, EDU is rolled on 2d6+6 then multiplied by 5 and is one of the most mechanically important characteristics. It determines your occupation skill points (EDU×4 for most occupations), your base Language (Own) skill, and your Know roll. Higher EDU means more skilled investigators with broader knowledge. EDU also influences your investigator's minimum age, as extensive education takes time.

How it works

**Generation**: Roll (2d6+6)×5 (range 40-90) **Derived Stats**: - **Occupation Skill Points**: EDU×4 (for most occupations; some use EDU×2 + another stat) - **Language (Own)**: Base equals EDU - **Know Roll**: EDU×1 (general knowledge check) **Hard/Extreme**: EDU÷2 and EDU÷5 for difficulty levels **Uses**: Occupation skill points, Know rolls for general knowledge, Language (Own) base, minimum age calculation

Tips

**When EDU Matters**: EDU is arguably the most important characteristic for investigators. More EDU = more occupation skill points = more capable character. Prioritize it for academic and professional investigators. **Age Trade-off**: Very high EDU implies older investigators. Older characters have more EDU (and thus more skills) but may have lower physical characteristics due to age.

Frequently asked questions

How does EDU affect character creation?

EDU×4 gives your occupation skill points for most occupations. An EDU of 70 provides 280 occupation points, while EDU 50 gives only 200. This makes a significant difference in how skilled your investigator is.

Can EDU increase during play?

Yes, EDU can increase through successful EDU improvement rolls between scenarios, representing ongoing learning. This is one way investigators improve over time, gaining both knowledge and additional skill points.
