Best Disciplines for Combat

Which Disciplines excel in combat? A guide to building an effective combat vampire in VTM5e.

Overview

While VTM5e is primarily a social horror game, combat is inevitable. Knowing which Disciplines give you an edge can mean the difference between victory and Final Death.

Tier 1: Potence

Potence is the undisputed king of combat Disciplines. Lethal Body (level 1) makes your unarmed attacks Aggravated to mortals. Prowess (level 2) adds your Potence rating to Strength for damage. Brutal Feed (level 3) lets you drain enemies in combat. At higher levels, you become a terrifying melee combatant.

Tier 1: Celerity

Speed wins fights. Cat's Grace makes you impossible to knock down. Fleetness adds to Dexterity for defense and initiative. Blink lets you close distances instantly. Draught of Elegance turns your speed into a weapon. Combined with firearms, Celerity makes you untouchable.

Tier 2: Fortitude

Survival is victory. Resilience adds to Health. Toughness reduces Superficial damage. Defy Bane lets you resist fire and sunlight briefly. Fortitude won't win fights alone, but it keeps you in them long enough to win.

Tier 3: Dominate/Presence

Why fight when you can make enemies fight each other? Compel can end fights before they start. Dread Gaze causes opponents to flee. Majesty makes you immune to attacks from those affected. These are situational but devastating when they work.

Honorable Mentions

Protean's Feral Claws deal Aggravated damage to everyone. Oblivion's Shadow Cloak grants invisibility for ambushes. Blood Sorcery has combat rituals. Auspex helps you never be surprised.

Quick Tips

  • Combine Potence + Celerity for maximum lethality
  • Fortitude is essential if you're the group's frontliner
  • Don't neglect non-combat solutions - Presence can end fights peacefully
  • Remember that combat in VTM5e is lethal; even powerful vampires can be destroyed
