Blood Potency Explained

Understanding Blood Potency in VTM5e - how it affects your vampire's power, feeding requirements, and the dangers of high potency.

Overview

Blood Potency represents the concentration and power of the Blood in your vampire's veins. Higher Blood Potency means greater supernatural power, but also stricter feeding requirements and more severe Banes.

Blood Potency Levels

Blood Potency ranges from 0 (Thin-bloods) to 10 (mythical Antediluvians). Most player characters start at Blood Potency 1-2. Each level increases your Blood Surge bonus, Mend amount, and Power Bonus, but also increases Bane Severity and feeding restrictions.

Blood Surge

Once per turn, you can add your Blood Potency to a single Physical dice pool by Rousing the Blood. At BP 1, this adds +1 die. At BP 3, it adds +2 dice. This is a powerful combat tool but increases Hunger.

Feeding Penalties

As Blood Potency increases, lesser blood becomes less satisfying. At BP 3+, animal blood provides no sustenance. At BP 5+, you need to drink from other supernatural creatures or drain humans completely. At BP 7+, only vampire blood can sustain you.

Bane Severity

Your clan Bane becomes more severe as Blood Potency rises. A Nosferatu at BP 1 is merely ugly; at BP 4, their presence causes technology to malfunction and animals to panic. This makes high Blood Potency a double-edged sword.

Gaining and Losing Blood Potency

Blood Potency naturally increases with age and can be raised with experience points. It decreases during torpor. Diablerie (drinking another vampire to Final Death) can dramatically increase Blood Potency but is one of the greatest crimes in vampire society.

Quick Tips

  • Don't rush to increase Blood Potency - the feeding restrictions can be campaign-ending
  • Blood Potency 2-3 is the sweet spot for most chronicles
  • Consider the social implications of high Blood Potency in Camarilla games
  • Work with your Storyteller on how your Bane severity manifests
