How Hunger Works in VTM5e

Complete guide to the Hunger system in Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition. Learn how Hunger dice work, when Hunger increases, and how to manage the Beast.

Overview

Hunger is the core mechanic that defines vampire existence in VTM5e. Unlike previous editions that used Blood Pool, Hunger represents the ever-present threat of the Beast and creates constant tension in every scene.

What is Hunger?

Hunger is measured on a scale of 0 to 5. At Hunger 0, your vampire is fully sated (though this state is rare and temporary). At Hunger 5, you're on the edge of losing control to the Beast. Most vampires operate between Hunger 1-3 during normal play.

Hunger Dice

When you roll dice pools, you replace a number of regular dice equal to your current Hunger with special Hunger dice. These dice can produce Messy Criticals (when you roll a 10 on a Hunger die alongside another 10) or Bestial Failures (when you fail and roll a 1 on a Hunger die). This means even successful rolls can have dangerous consequences.

When Hunger Increases

Hunger increases when you: Rouse the Blood (use Disciplines, heal damage, wake for the night, increase physical attributes), fail a Rouse Check (roll a single die - on 1-5, Hunger increases by 1), or when the Storyteller calls for it narratively. You can never voluntarily increase Hunger above 5.

Reducing Hunger

The only way to reduce Hunger is to feed on human blood. Animal blood and bagged blood can reduce Hunger but never below Hunger 1. Only drinking directly from a living human can reduce Hunger to 0, and even then, you risk killing your victim or creating a Blood Bond.

Hunger Frenzy

At Hunger 5, you must make a Frenzy check whenever you encounter blood or are provoked. If you fail, the Beast takes over and you will feed on the nearest source of blood, regardless of consequences. This can lead to Masquerade breaches, killing mortals, or attacking allies.

Quick Tips

  • Keep Hunger between 1-3 for optimal play - low enough to avoid constant Frenzy risk, high enough to feel the tension
  • Plan your feeding before major scenes where you'll need to use Disciplines
  • Messy Criticals aren't always bad - they can create memorable roleplay moments
  • Consider your Predator Type when planning how your character feeds
