Desperation (Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition)
Definition
Desperation is the core risk mechanic of Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition, replacing the Hunger system used by vampires. It represents the mounting tension, fear, and adrenaline that builds as hunters face increasingly dangerous supernatural threats. Desperation is not an individual stat but a shared pool for the entire cell, reflecting the collective pressure the group faces. As Desperation rises, hunters gain access to Desperation Dice -- additional dice added to their pools that represent the edge that fear and adrenaline provide. These extra dice can turn failures into successes, representing those moments when terror sharpens your focus and survival instinct kicks in. However, Desperation Dice come with a terrible cost: if any Desperation Die shows a 1, it can trigger Despair. Desperation embodies the central tension of Hunter 5e. Hunters are mortals fighting things that vastly outclass them. The only way to bridge that gap is to push themselves to the breaking point -- to channel their fear into power. But push too far, and the fear consumes them. Managing Desperation is the core tactical challenge of every Hunt.

Frequently asked questions
How is Desperation different from Hunger in VTM5e?
Hunger is individual and ever-present for vampires. Desperation is shared by the cell and situation-dependent. Hunger represents the Beast within; Desperation represents the terror of being mortal against the supernatural.
Can hunters choose not to use Desperation Dice?
Yes. Adding Desperation Dice is optional. Hunters can choose to play it safe and skip the extra dice, accepting worse odds to avoid the risk of Despair.
