Arete (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)
Definition
Arete is the single most important trait on a Mage character sheet. It represents the mage's level of magical enlightenment, the depth of their understanding of reality, and the raw power of their Awakened will. Every magical effect in M20 is rolled using Arete as the dice pool. A mage with Arete 3 rolls three dice for every spell, regardless of which Sphere they use. Arete is not merely skill; it is understanding. A mage with high Arete comprehends reality at a fundamental level, seeing through the illusions of the Consensus to the malleable Tapestry beneath. Increasing Arete requires a Seeking, a mystical ordeal guided by the mage's Avatar in which they confront their limitations, overcome trials, and emerge with deeper insight. Arete cannot be purchased with experience points alone; it must be earned through transformative narrative experiences.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Arete used for all magick instead of individual Sphere ratings?
Arete represents holistic understanding of reality, not technical skill with specific domains. A mage reshapes reality through will and belief, and Arete measures the strength of that will. Sphere ratings determine what effects are possible; Arete determines how effectively the mage can execute them.
What is a Seeking?
A Seeking is a mystical ordeal, often experienced as a vision or dream, in which the mage's Avatar tests them. The mage must confront personal limitations, solve paradoxes of understanding, or overcome symbolic challenges. Success grants a permanent increase in Arete. The Avatar Background rating affects how often Seekings occur and how accessible they are.
Can Arete decrease?
Under extreme circumstances, yes. Gilgul, the most severe punishment in Awakened society, can strip a mage's Avatar and Arete entirely. Severe spiritual trauma or catastrophic Paradox events can also theoretically reduce Arete, though this is rare and always a major story event.
