Arete (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)

Derived

Definition

Arete is the single most important trait on a Mage character sheet. It represents the mage's level of magical enlightenment, the depth of their understanding of reality, and the raw power of their Awakened will. Every magical effect in M20 is rolled using Arete as the dice pool. A mage with Arete 3 rolls three dice for every spell, regardless of which Sphere they use. Arete is not merely skill; it is understanding. A mage with high Arete comprehends reality at a fundamental level, seeing through the illusions of the Consensus to the malleable Tapestry beneath. Increasing Arete requires a Seeking, a mystical ordeal guided by the mage's Avatar in which they confront their limitations, overcome trials, and emerge with deeper insight. Arete cannot be purchased with experience points alone; it must be earned through transformative narrative experiences.

How it works

**Key Uses**: - Dice pool for ALL magical effects (roll Arete vs. difficulty) - Determines the maximum Sphere rating a mage can possess (Sphere dots cannot exceed Arete) - Represents overall magical competence and enlightenment **Special Rules**: Starting characters typically have Arete 1-3. The difficulty for magick rolls varies based on whether the effect is coincidental (typically difficulty 4-6) or vulgar (difficulty 6-9). Arete also caps Sphere ratings: a mage with Arete 3 cannot have any Sphere above 3 dots. Increasing Arete beyond the starting value requires a successful Seeking.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Arete is the foundation of everything your mage does magically. Starting with Arete 3 provides a workable dice pool but leaves room for growth. Invest in a high Avatar Background to make future Seekings more accessible and advance Arete faster. **Tradition Synergies**: All Traditions pursue Arete growth, but their methods differ. Akashic Brotherhood seek Arete through physical discipline and meditation. Order of Hermes pursue it through study and ritual mastery. Cult of Ecstasy achieve breakthroughs through transcendent experience. **Character Concepts**: Newly Awakened mage struggling with Arete 1, experienced Tradition member with Arete 3 seeking the next breakthrough, elder mage with Arete 5 approaching the boundaries of mortal understanding.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Arete used for all magick instead of individual Sphere ratings?

Arete represents holistic understanding of reality, not technical skill with specific domains. A mage reshapes reality through will and belief, and Arete measures the strength of that will. Sphere ratings determine what effects are possible; Arete determines how effectively the mage can execute them.

What is a Seeking?

A Seeking is a mystical ordeal, often experienced as a vision or dream, in which the mage's Avatar tests them. The mage must confront personal limitations, solve paradoxes of understanding, or overcome symbolic challenges. Success grants a permanent increase in Arete. The Avatar Background rating affects how often Seekings occur and how accessible they are.

Can Arete decrease?

Under extreme circumstances, yes. Gilgul, the most severe punishment in Awakened society, can strip a mage's Avatar and Arete entirely. Severe spiritual trauma or catastrophic Paradox events can also theoretically reduce Arete, though this is rare and always a major story event.
