Advantage

Beginner
Mechanics

Definition

A mechanic where you roll two d20s and take the higher result. Represents favorable circumstances, good positioning, or helpful conditions.

How it works in different systems

D&D 5e: Roll 2d20, take higher. Replaced most numerical situational modifiers.
Call of Cthulhu 7e: Bonus dice - roll extra tens die, take better result.
Vampire V5: No advantage - you just add/remove dice from your pool instead.
Powered by the Apocalypse: Forward/ongoing bonuses (+1, +2) instead of advantage mechanic.

Example

You're attacking while hidden, giving you advantage. Roll 2d20 and take the higher: you get 8 and 15, so you use the 15!

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking multiple sources of advantage stack (they don't - 1 advantage = 1 disadvantage, regardless of sources)
  • Forgetting advantage/disadvantage when it applies
  • Not knowing advantage is equivalent to about +5 on average
