Dice Notation
Dice Notation
Also known as: dice code, dice expression
Definition
The standard way to write dice rolls: NdX+M means roll N dice with X sides and add M. For example, 2d6+3 means roll two six-sided dice and add 3 to the total.
How it works in different systems
D&D 5e: Uses d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20. Most rolls are 1d20+modifier.
Call of Cthulhu 7e: Primarily d100 (2d10 as percentile) and 1d6/1d8 for damage.
Powered by the Apocalypse: Always 2d6+modifier for moves.
Savage Worlds: Uses 'exploding' dice - if you roll max, roll again and add.
Example
“3d8+5 means: roll three 8-sided dice, add them together, then add 5. If you roll 4, 6, and 2, your total is 4+6+2+5 = 17.”
Common Mistakes
- Thinking 2d6 and 1d12 are the same (2d6 averages 7 and ranges 2-12; 1d12 averages 6.5 and ranges 1-12)
- Forgetting the 'd' stands for 'dice' not 'divided by'
