AI features now run on Claude Sonnet 5

New

The AI behind character generation, the rules assistant, NPCs, scene tools, story mode, and the Virtual GM now runs on Anthropic's newest Claude Sonnet model, Sonnet 5, the current generation of the model we already used. Credit costs are unchanged.

Suggest edits again, and shared characters show the right sheet

New

Fixed two things that had quietly stopped working. On any system reference page you can once again suggest a correction, and see and vote on other people's suggestions, with well-supported edits auto-approving once they pass the community vote threshold (submitting and loading corrections had been failing behind the scenes). And when you share a character, its public page now uses that system's own sheet with a proper read-only view for visitors, instead of sometimes rendering every character through the Vampire layout.

AI tools work end to end, and GM tools are easier to find

New

We fixed a class of bugs where several AI features could fail right after generating, so you would spend credits and then hit an error instead of seeing your result. This hit character tools (scene summaries, reaction ideas, writing help) and the game-master tools (session prep, plot hooks, party dynamics, story-so-far recap) alike. Every AI feature is now validated end to end, so if a generation ever does fail the credits it used are refunded automatically and we are alerted right away instead of it breaking quietly. For game masters, all the campaign AI tools now live in one "GM tools" tab inside a campaign, and any tracked thread with a description gets a new one-click summary that condenses a long roleplay thread into its key events, unresolved points, and standout character moments.

Your character edits always save now

New

We hunted down and fixed a bug where editing a character sheet could silently fail to save, so changes weren't actually being kept (it hit some sheets, including Mage and Werewolf, the hardest). Autosave is rock-solid now across every sheet: your edits save automatically as you go, and they're kept even if you close the tab, navigate away, or are on mobile mid-edit. We also closed the same silent-saving gap in a few more places, scene contributions, campaign notes, threads, and timeline events now reliably save and clearly tell you if something goes wrong instead of quietly dropping what you typed. And if a save ever does fail, we're now alerted instantly so we can jump on it. Plus a batch of smaller fixes: advancement won't let you raise a trait you can't afford, an expired session now prompts you to sign back in instead of losing your work, the initiative tracker's combat controls work again, and several pages that could error out now fail gracefully.

A smoother, clearer app top to bottom

New

A big usability pass. Creating a character is faster: picking "create a character" now drops you straight into building one instead of a wall of systems, the steps are clearer, and we say plainly that creating is free (your first few AI creations are on us). Story mode no longer charges you just for opening it, you decide to begin first, and "edit in sheet mode" keeps your work. AI tools across the app now show what they cost before you spend, warn you and link to top up if you are low, and let you cancel a generation mid-wait. Errors stopped being dead ends: failed sign-in links can be resent, the error and not-found pages have a way back, and out-of-credit messages always offer a path to get more. You can now preview a public campaign without an account, the pricing page shows the unlimited plan, and confirmation prompts got a proper styled dialog instead of the browser popup.

Solo play, smoother end to end

New

Playing solo with the Virtual GM got a lot better. You can jump straight in by picking a character, the GM streams its narration as it writes instead of leaving you on a blank screen, and a finished scene now wraps up with a clear recap and a way back to your campaign. You also fully own your solo campaign, with settings, new scenes, and delete, and a "Solo" badge marks it so it is not confused with a multiplayer game. Opening a scene shows its 5 credit cost upfront.

Roll from your sheet and in scenes

New

Dice rolling is now wired into the places you actually play. Roll straight from a character sheet and the result logs to that character's campaign history, with a note on each sheet showing where its rolls go. Inside a campaign scene there is a shared roller, so the GM and players see the same result. The standalone dice page also got a cleaner, simpler look.

Advancement spends XP on more sheets

New

Raising attributes, skills, and powers on the Mage, Werewolf, and Hunter sheets now costs experience the way the Vampire sheet already did, so your Available XP total actually means something instead of letting you raise traits for free. The cost is a simple, consistent rule for now and is easy to tune toward each system's book later.

Private campaigns stay private, plus account fixes

New

A security pass made sure private campaigns are only visible to their members. You can now manage or cancel your subscription from Billing, transactional emails match the app's look, and a batch of dead links got fixed (email preferences, the Builds and Character options links on system pages, and several dice systems that led nowhere). Mobile gained a search button, AI Studio now tells you if a save fails and confirms when a portrait is attached to your character, and NPC chat shows your remaining free messages and per-message cost.

Creation tools save reliably again

New

Fixed a batch of input bugs so the tools reliably save what you put in. The post composer now saves and exports drafts (it had been silently rejecting them), campaign NPCs save with their visibility setting, post-session XP awards record correctly, and editing a character relationship keeps the linked name. The relationship "Generate summary" button works again too. Separately, the AI character generator now scaffolds Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Daggerheart, and Draw Steel characters with proper race, class, and ancestry choices instead of falling back to generic fields.

More accurate AI NPC generation

New

Tightened the NPC generator so its stats fit each system properly. Vampire NPCs now stick to the V5 Discipline list (no more "Thaumaturgy" slipping in from older editions) and use V5-style dot ratings instead of the old 7/5/3 spread. Call of Cthulhu NPCs use the correct 7th-edition characteristic scale (15 to 90, not the old 3 to 18). Cyberpunk RED hit points are calculated correctly. And the generator now has proper, system-accurate stat blocks for Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Daggerheart, and Draw Steel, which previously fell back to generic stats. Vampire NPCs can also be generated as any V5 clan now, including Banu Haqim, Hecata, Lasombra, The Ministry, Ravnos, Salubri, and Tzimisce, which were missing before.

RPG Stack by the numbers

New

A new public stats page at stats.rpgstack.com shows what the community is building: characters created, campaigns running, dice rolled, the most popular systems, plus live service status and the latest changes. All aggregate numbers, no personal data.

More lore and rules fixes across six systems

New

A content review of the marketing and guide pages turned up a handful of edition mix-ups, now corrected. Vampire V5: the clan write-ups referenced Dementation (Malkavian) and Vicissitude (Tzimisce), which are 20th-Anniversary disciplines; V5 handles those through Dominate, Auspex, and Protean instead. Werewolf 5e: the shapeshift forms now use W5 dice-pool bonuses (Crinos gives +4 dice to Physical pools and +4 Health levels), not the flat attribute bonuses from older editions. Call of Cthulhu 7e: the temporary-insanity check was backwards; you suffer a bout when you succeed the Intelligence roll and the horror sinks in. Mage M20: the ability list now reads 11 Talents, 13 Skills, 11 Knowledges to match the sheet. Cyberpunk RED: corrected the starting HP formula. Daggerheart: fixed the Infernis ancestry spelling and removed a non-canonical Daemon entry.

Vampire V5: Oblivion, Thin-Blood Alchemy, and the Extortionist

New

Filled three gaps in the Vampire: The Masquerade reference. Oblivion now has a full Discipline page covering the Lasombra and Hecata shadow-and-death powers across all five levels, plus its Ceremonies. Thin-Blood Alchemy is documented as the Duskborn craft of brewing Formulae from vitae and reagents. And the Extortionist predator type from the V5 Players Guide is now available, with its correct bonuses: an Intimidation or Larceny specialty, a free dot of Dominate or Potence, three dots split between Contacts and Resources, and the two-dot Enemy flaw.

A faster path from new character to playing

New

Getting started is smoother. Right after you sign up, one quick question points you at your first real step: create a character or set up a campaign. A freshly created character now suggests what to do next, add an AI portrait, generate a personality profile, ask the rules assistant, or make your first NPC. Generated NPCs can get a portrait in one tap. And GMs get a shareable invite link on every campaign, so bringing players in is a single copy and paste.

Bring your characters in, and take them to the table

New

Two big portability features. Import: bring any character into RPG Stack, upload an RPG Stack JSON export, or just paste your sheet from D&D Beyond, Foundry, Roll20, or a forum post and the AI maps it to the right system (uses a free character creation or generation credits). Print: every character now has a Print / Save as PDF option in the Export menu, a clean, printer-friendly sheet for in-person sessions. Your characters, your data, wherever you play.

Notifications: never miss your turn again

New

RPG Stack now has in-app notifications, look for the bell in the top bar. You'll be notified when your character is approved (or needs changes), when you're added to a campaign, when a session is scheduled or canceled, and, the big one for play-by-post, when someone posts in a scene you're part of, so the story keeps moving. GMs get notified when a player joins via invite code or submits a character for approval.

New feature

Privacy and AI-credit fairness overhaul

New

A deep audit and fix pass across the whole app. Privacy: content you mark private or GM-only (backstory sections, relationships, NPC secrets) is now strictly filtered server-side for anyone who isn't the owner or GM, including NPC lists, initiative trackers, and AI features. Joining a campaign now properly goes through GM approval. Fairness: if an AI generation fails, your credits (or free character creation) are automatically refunded, you'll never pay for a result you didn't get. Also fixed: a World of Darkness dice bug in Virtual GM scenes that made pool rolls nearly impossible to succeed, and a bug that could lock a Virtual GM scene after a failed start.

AI character generator is working again

New

The AI-assisted character creator was returning errors for every request because of a malformed-JSON failure inside the Claude integration. Rewrote the JSON-handling layer to force structured output (prefilled assistant turn, stronger format rules) and added progressive repair so common malformed-response edge cases (trailing prose, trailing commas, truncated output) self-correct instead of erroring. Same fix lifts reliability across every AI feature, not just character generation. Verified clean in production, no character-generation errors logged in the post-deploy window.

Third lore-accuracy sweep: schema bugs and W5 tribes

New

Spot-checking the previous audits caught a fresh round of stale data hiding in schema files. Werewolf 5e now lists the canonical 11 W5 tribes (the 2024 Corebook intentionally dropped Fianna, Get of Fenris, and Uktena; added Galestalkers, Ghost Council, and Hart Wardens). Mage M20's Skills section was a V5 template (with craft, larceny, persuasion, finance, insight, none of which are M20 abilities); now correctly lists M20's canonical 11 Talents + 13 Skills + 11 Knowledges. Hunter 5e had a leftover V5 Humanity field; removed and replaced with Desperation. Werewolf 5e had a pre-W5 Breed field; W5 dropped Breed in favour of Form-shifting in play. Vampire V5's standalone sheet predator list was missing Blood Leech, Sandman, and Extortionist while listing non-canonical Scene Queen and Soldier; all corrected.

Purpose-built character sheets you can roll from

New

Vampire V5, Mage M20, Werewolf 5e, and Hunter 5e now have purpose-built character sheets designed around how each system actually plays, with system-specific theme accents. The best part: roll dice straight from the sheet. Tap a trait or power and the right pool is built for you, and a recent-rolls widget keeps your last results in view.

Mage: The Ascension gets dedicated tools

New

Mage is one of our most-played systems, so it gets the first system-specific toolset. A Paradox tracker models vulgar versus coincidental magick and sleeper witnesses, so you always know your backlash risk. A Sphere compendium covers all nine Spheres across five levels with vulgar and coincidental examples, and an archetypes guide offers one ready-to-play concept per Tradition, plus an Orphan.

Cross-system lore accuracy pass

New

A second sweep, this time across the lore content, not just the rules data. Vampire V5 now has detailed clan write-ups for all 14 clans (Banu Haqim, Hecata, Lasombra, The Ministry, Ravnos, Salubri, and Tzimisce were missing). Call of Cthulhu 7e added the Luck characteristic that had been left out. Daggerheart removed a non-canonical "Underborne" community. Draw Steel now lists 12 ancestries (was 11; the page wasn't splitting Elf into High and Wode). Werewolf 5e Galliard and Ragabash auspice Renown affinities corrected to Glory and Wisdom per the W5 Corebook. Mage M20 Sons of Ether affinity Sphere corrected to Matter.

Game-rules accuracy pass across 6 systems

New

A round of fixes to character sheets and rules data so every system matches its published rulebook. Vampire V5 now uses the correct dot-assignment for attributes and skills (was V20-style 7/5/3). Mage M20 attributes now show Appearance and Perception (were V5's Composure and Resolve), and 5 missing canonical abilities were added (Art, Meditation, Stealth, Survival, Politics). Hunter 5e Edges replaced 1st-edition Creeds that had crept in. Werewolf 5e attribute distribution arithmetic fixed. D&D 5e Exhaustion condition added. Cyberpunk RED Carry corrected to lbs. V5 Extortionist predator type added.

New

Corrected dice rolling mechanics across 6 systems including Vampire V5, Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk Red, Werewolf 5e, Mork Borg, and Mothership. Rolls now follow the official rules for each system, critical successes, fumbles, and special results are all calculated correctly.
