Dice mechanics
Dice pool basics in Daggerheart
Rolling multiple dice and counting successes.
Explanation
Daggerheart resolves rolls with Duality Dice: roll two d12s (one Hope die, one Fear die), add your trait modifier, and compare to a Difficulty. Which die rolls higher colors the outcome, succeeding with Hope builds your resources, while Fear feeds the GM's.
At the table (quick loop)
- Roll the two Duality Dice (Hope d12 + Fear d12) and add your trait.
- Compare the total to the Difficulty to find success or failure.
- Note which die is higher: with Hope you gain a Hope token; with Fear the GM gains Fear to spend against the party.
Example: Total 14 vs Difficulty 12 with the Hope die higher: you succeed with Hope and bank a Hope token.
Examples
Example: build the pool
Pick the two traits that match your approach (often Attribute + Skill), roll that many d10s, then count successes.
Example: raise/lower difficulty
Instead of stacking small modifiers, change the difficulty (required successes) so the decision is readable.
Common mistakes (smallest fix)
- Mistake: Rolling without a clear pool. Fix: Say the approach, then pick the two traits that define the pool.
- Mistake: Counting successes inconsistently. Fix: Keep one quick reference open (cheat sheet) during play.
