Daggerheart Roll resolution cheat sheet
A 1-page summary of how to resolve rolls. At-the-table reference for Daggerheart.
Daggerheart resolves rolls with Duality Dice (2d12): one Hope die and one Fear die. The total determines success, and which die is higher determines the narrative tone.
Core mechanic
- Formula
- 2d12 (Hope + Fear) + trait modifier
- Success
- Total ≥ Difficulty
- Hope result
- Hope die is higher: player keeps momentum, gains a Hope token
- Fear result
- Fear die is higher: GM gains a Fear token
- Critical
- Doubles on the 2d12 = critical success
At-the-table steps
- Describe what you are trying to do.
- GM sets the Difficulty (or it is the target's Evasion for attacks).
- Roll 2d12 + trait. Compare total to Difficulty.
- Check which die is higher: Hope or Fear. Apply the momentum shift.

Common mistakes
- Hope and Fear are about which die is higher, not whether you succeed. You can succeed with Fear (good outcome, but the GM gets a token).
- Doubles always crit, even on a miss: the total might be low but the critical overrides.
- Advantage and Disadvantage exist too: roll an extra d6 and add it (Advantage) or subtract it (Disadvantage), separate from Hope/Fear.
