Locksmith (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)
Definition
Locksmith represents your ability to open locks without the proper key, crack safes, and bypass mechanical security devices. In Call of Cthulhu, where vital clues hide behind locked doors, in sealed safes, and within secured buildings, Locksmith is an investigator's best friend. This skill covers understanding lock mechanisms, using picks and improvised tools, cracking combination safes, and defeating other mechanical security. In the 1920s, electronic security doesn't exist—everything is mechanical, which means a skilled locksmith can bypass almost any barrier given time and tools. The skill also covers understanding and disabling alarm systems of the era.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need lock picks?
Proper lock picks give normal rolls. Improvised tools (hairpins, wire) impose penalty dice. Without any tools, most locks are impossible to pick. Carry a set of picks if you invest in this skill.
How long does it take to pick a lock?
Simple padlocks take a minute or two. Standard door locks take several minutes. Quality safes can take hours. The Keeper determines time based on the lock's complexity and your success level.
