Appearance (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)

Attributes

Definition

Appearance measures a mage's physical attractiveness, bearing, and overall visual impression. In M20, Appearance is not just about conventional beauty; it encompasses the entire physical impression a mage makes, from striking features to a commanding bearing. An Awakened character's Appearance often reflects their paradigm, whether a Verbena's wild beauty, a Hermetic's dignified composure, or a Virtual Adept's cyberpunk aesthetic. Appearance affects first impressions, social interactions, and how easily a mage blends into or stands out from crowds. In the Ascension War, looking forgettable can be as valuable as looking stunning. High Appearance draws attention, which can be a blessing when recruiting allies or a curse when the Technocracy is hunting you.

How it works

**Key Uses**: - First impressions based on physical appearance - Social situations where looks matter - Intimidation or seduction through physical presence - Blending in or standing out in crowds **Special Rules**: Appearance modifies many Social rolls as a passive factor. An Appearance of 0 indicates something disturbing about the character's looks, imposing penalties on most social interactions. Some supernatural effects (Life magick, Paradox Flaws) can alter Appearance permanently.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Often treated as a dump stat by combat and research focused mages, but it affects every face-to-face social interaction. Even a rating of 2 (average) avoids penalties. Consider your mage's paradigm when choosing a rating. **Tradition Synergies**: Cult of Ecstasy often cultivate striking appearances as part of their ecstatic practice. Celestial Chorus may project serene beauty. Hollow Ones embrace dark, striking aesthetics. **Character Concepts**: Cult of Ecstasy seductive artist, Verbena primal beauty, Hollow One gothically striking mage, Etherite whose Appearance reflects eccentric genius.

Frequently asked questions

Can magick change my Appearance?

Yes. Life 3 allows a mage to alter their own physical form, including Appearance. This is typically coincidental if subtle (cosmetic changes over time) but vulgar if dramatic (instant transformation). Paradox Flaws can also permanently reduce Appearance.

Does low Appearance mean ugly?

Not necessarily. Appearance 1 could mean plain, forgettable, or off-putting. It could represent scarring, an unsettling gaze, or simply a complete lack of physical distinction. An Appearance of 0, however, indicates something genuinely disturbing about the character's looks.
