Language (Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition)
Definition
Language (Other) is a specialization skill—each specialty represents fluency in a specific language beyond your native tongue. In Call of Cthulhu, where Mythos tomes are written in Latin, Arabic, Greek, and more obscure languages, linguistic ability is a critical investigation tool. Every investigator has their own language (Language: Own) at a base of EDU. Language (Other) covers additional languages. In the 1920s, educated investigators often know French, German, or Latin from their schooling. More exotic languages become important when deciphering ancient texts, communicating with foreign contacts, or reading Mythos tomes in their original language. Some Mythos texts exist only in languages like Aklo, Hyperborean, or R'lyehian.

Frequently asked questions
Which languages are most useful?
Latin appears in many Mythos tomes and academic sources. French and German are common in 1920s academia. Arabic is important for Mythos texts from the Middle East. Ask your Keeper what languages might be relevant.
Can I read Mythos tomes in translation?
Translations exist for some tomes but may be incomplete or inaccurate. Reading the original language often provides fuller understanding and may be required for certain spells or rituals.
