Mentor (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)

Backgrounds

Definition

Mentor represents an older, more experienced mage who takes an interest in your character's development. Mentors provide training, advice, magical instruction, and sometimes political protection within the Traditions. The relationship between a mage and their Mentor is one of the most important in the Awakened world, shaping the student's understanding of magick, paradigm, and purpose. A Mentor's value extends beyond simple instruction. They can introduce the mage to important figures, vouch for them at Tradition councils, provide warnings about threats, and offer perspective gained from decades or centuries of experience. However, Mentors also have expectations. They may demand service, assign dangerous tasks, or push the student toward goals that serve the Mentor's own agenda.

How it works

**Key Uses**: - Receive magical instruction and training - Gain political protection and introductions - Access advice based on centuries of experience **Special Rules**: Mentor rating reflects the Mentor's power, influence, and availability. A one-dot Mentor might be a slightly more experienced mage with limited time. A five-dot Mentor could be an Archmage who takes a personal interest. Higher-rated Mentors are more powerful but also busier and more demanding.

Tips

**Build Advice**: Extremely useful for new characters who need guidance and training. Provides natural story hooks and a source of knowledge and support. Consider the narrative cost: Mentors always want something in return. **Tradition Synergies**: Order of Hermes have a formal apprenticeship tradition. Akashic Brotherhood masters train students in Do and meditation. Celestial Chorus elders guide younger mages in faith. All Traditions value the mentor-student relationship. **Character Concepts**: Hermetic apprentice under a demanding master, Akashic student learning from a Do sensei, newly Awakened mage guided by a mysterious elder, Verbena initiate trained by a coven elder.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my Mentor dies?

The Background dots are lost, and the mage must find new sources of instruction and guidance. The death of a Mentor is a significant story event that often drives character development and can become a major plot point.

Can my Mentor be from a different Tradition?

With Storyteller approval, yes. Cross-Tradition mentorship is unusual but not impossible. It often creates interesting narrative tension and gives the mage a broader perspective on magick, though it may generate suspicion from their own Tradition.
