Contacts (Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition)

Backgrounds

Definition

Contacts are people who know things and will tell you: a court clerk, a bartender who hears everything, a hacker, a coroner's assistant. They are not loyal, they are transactional, and that is what makes them reliable. Each dot usually represents a sphere (police, nightlife, finance, the street). Define yours so the Storyteller knows which doors open.

How it works

**Dot ratings**: One dot is a single useful acquaintance in a niche; three dots a broad network across a field; five dots ears in every quarter of the city. **Effect**: Gain information or minor favors within a contact's sphere, often with an Investigation or Persuasion roll and some time. **Cost**: Drawn from the 7 Background dots at creation (typical cap 3 per Background, Storyteller may allow more); after creation each new dot costs 3 times the new rating in XP. **Predator Types**: Alleycat, Consensualist, Farmer, Sandman, Siren, and Extortionist all grant Contacts +1 in this system's rules, each flavored to how they hunt.

Tips

**Character concepts**: Journalist, fixer, nightlife promoter, private investigator, street-level dealer. **When to take**: Almost every coterie needs at least one member with Contacts. Take two or three dots spread across spheres rather than one deep dot.

Frequently asked questions

Will my contacts fight for me?

No. Contacts provide information and small favors. For people who will take risks on your behalf, you want Allies or Retainers.

Can a contact betray me?

Yes. Contacts are transactional, so a better offer or real fear can turn them. Treat them well and pay on time.
