Avatar (Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary)
Definition
Avatar represents the strength, clarity, and personality of the mage's Awakened soul, the inner spark that connects them to the Tapestry and drives their magical potential. Every mage has an Avatar, but its strength varies dramatically. A strong Avatar provides clearer guidance, more vivid Seekings, and a deeper connection to the currents of reality. The Avatar Background is uniquely important in Mage because it directly affects the Seeking process, the mystical ordeals through which mages increase their Arete. A high Avatar rating means Seekings are more accessible and the Avatar communicates its desires more clearly. However, a strong Avatar also has a stronger personality and agenda, sometimes pushing the mage in directions they might not choose on their own.

Frequently asked questions
What is an Avatar Essence?
Each Avatar has an Essence: Dynamic (change and revolution), Pattern (order and structure), Primordial (fundamental truths), or Questing (exploration and discovery). The Essence shapes the Avatar's personality, the themes of Seekings, and the mage's deepest magical drive.
Can Avatar rating increase during play?
Typically no. Avatar is one of the few Backgrounds that remains relatively fixed. Some Storytellers allow it to change through extraordinary circumstances, but it generally stays at its starting value throughout the chronicle.
