Mawla (Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition)
Mawla (Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition)
Backgrounds
Definition
Mawla is a vampire patron: often your sire, sometimes a clan elder or a Baron who took an interest. They advise, warn, and occasionally intervene, and in exchange they expect loyalty and service. No Mawla is free. Their enemies become yours, their requests come at bad times, and their protection can vanish the night you become inconvenient.
How it works
**Dot ratings**: One dot is a minor Kindred with limited pull; three dots an established Ancilla with real influence; five dots a Primogen, Baron, or comparable power. **Effect**: Access to advice, introductions, and occasional direct help proportional to your Mawla's standing. The Storyteller decides how often you can call on them. **Cost**: Drawn from the 7 Background dots at creation (typical cap 3 per Background, Storyteller may allow more); after creation each new dot costs 3 times the new rating in XP. **Predator Types**: Blood Leech grants Mawla +1 (a violent patron) in this system's rules.
Tips
**Character concepts**: Favored childe, apprentice to a Tremere regent, Anarch under a Baron's wing, Blood Leech shielded by a dangerous elder. **When to take**: Take it if you want an NPC who can rescue you occasionally and demand payment later. It pairs naturally with Status.
Frequently asked questions
Can my Mawla be my sire?
Yes, and it is the most common choice. Note that Prestigious Sire is a separate merit about reputation, while Mawla is about active help.
Can my Mawla be from another clan or sect?
Yes, with Storyteller approval. Cross-clan or cross-sect patrons create excellent intrigue and are a common Anarch setup.
