Fudging
Fudging
Also known as: fudging dice, cheating
Definition
When a GM secretly changes dice results to achieve a desired outcome. Controversial - some see it as protecting fun, others as betraying the game's trust.
Example
“The monster rolled a crit that would kill the level 1 character in session 1. The GM pretends it was just a regular hit. Is that good GMing or betraying player trust?”
Common Mistakes
- Fudging constantly, removing all stakes from dice
- Never fudging even when the result would be unfun for everyone
- Not considering alternatives (GM intrusions, luck points, narrative saves)
