Understanding Rage and the five Garou forms in Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th Edition.
Overview
Rage is the primal fury that powers Garou abilities and enables their legendary shapeshifting. Learning to harness Rage without losing control is the central challenge of playing a werewolf.
What Is Rage?
Rage is measured 0-5 and represents your werewolf's fury. It powers Gifts, enhances combat, and allows shape-shifting. Unlike vampire Hunger, Rage can be beneficial but also triggers Frenzy when it overwhelms you.
Gaining and Spending Rage
Gain Rage when: taking damage, witnessing Wyrm corruption, seeing pack members hurt, or during emotional triggers. Spend Rage to: shift forms, activate Gifts, heal damage, or gain extra actions. Managing this economy is key.
The Five Forms
Homid (human): social interaction and blending in, no mechanical bonuses. Glabro (near-human): +2 dice to Physical pools, -2 to Social, intimidating but passable. Crinos (war form): +4 dice to Physical pools, +4 Health levels, Aggravated claws, and Delirium in mortal witnesses (Social actions automatically fail). Hispo (dire wolf): +2 dice to Physical pools, enhanced bite and senses. Lupus (wolf): +2 dice to Stealth and Survival, ultimate mobility and tracking.
Crinos and Delirium
The Crinos war form is terrifying. Humans who see it experience Delirium - supernatural terror that erases memories. This protects the Veil but means you can't use Crinos around witnesses without consequences.
Frenzy
When Rage exceeds your Composure, you risk Frenzy. In Frenzy, you attack the nearest target (friend or foe) and can't use complex tactics. Frenzy ends when no threats remain or you're incapacitated. It's a serious risk in populated areas.
Quick Tips
- Keep Rage at 2-3 for flexibility - too low limits power, too high risks Frenzy
- Crinos is for combat, not conversation
- Lupus form is underrated for escape and tracking
- Know your Frenzy triggers and avoid them in social situations
