Overview

Drive Land Vehicle covers cars, motorcycles, and trucks: everything with wheels that stays on the ground. Ordinary driving does not need a roll. The skill exists for the version where you are being shot at, the road is not cooperating, or somebody behind you wants to be in front. At the table it is the extraction skill. Almost every job in Night City ends with the crew needing to be somewhere else quickly, and the driver is the one who decides whether that happens. It also covers the chase from the other side, running down a target vehicle without wrecking your own, and the deeply practical business of getting a heavily armed crew across a city that has checkpoints.

How it works

Linked Stat: REF Category: Control Resolution: 1d10 plus REF plus skill level against a DV, or opposed by the other driver during a chase. A natural 10 lets you roll again and add, and a natural 1 subtracts a second roll, which at speed is a genuine crash risk. When rolls happen: Routine driving needs none. Rolls come with speed, weather, damaged roads, evasive maneuvers, or anything the vehicle was not designed to survive. Vehicle quality and damage shift the DV in both directions.

Tips and playstyle

Best for: Nomads first, then any crew that has to leave a site faster than corporate response arrives. Character concepts: A Nomad convoy driver, a getaway specialist, a Lawman in a pursuit vehicle, a courier on a bike who knows every alley. Synergies: Land Vehicle Tech repairs what the chase broke and tunes what it did not. Perception spots the roadblock in time, Local Expert supplies the route, and Handgun matters because someone is usually shooting out of a window.

Frequently asked questions

When do I roll to drive?

Only when failing has consequences: chases, bad conditions, violent maneuvers, or driving something you have no business driving. Getting across town on a clear day is never a roll.

Does this cover motorcycles?

Yes, land vehicles of all kinds sit under this one skill. GMs may raise the DV when you are handling something genuinely unfamiliar, such as a heavy rig if you have only ever ridden a bike.

How are chases resolved?

Usually as repeated opposed rolls against the other driver, with the environment adjusting the DV. Losing several exchanges in a row is what ends the chase, not one unlucky roll.
