Overview

Perception is general awareness: spotting the second shooter on the balcony, noticing that the same car has been behind you for three blocks, catching the blood someone tried to clean off a doorframe. It runs on INT rather than a physical sense, because the skill is about interpreting what you took in, not about how good your eyes are. At the table Perception is the most universally useful non-combat skill in Cyberpunk RED. It is what stands between the crew and an ambush, and it is how most scenes hand out the information the players need. GMs lean on it constantly, often without asking, which means a character with a low rank quietly misses things they will never know were there.

How it works

Linked Stat: INT Category: Awareness Resolution: 1d10 plus INT plus skill level against a DV, or opposed by Stealth and Conceal/Reveal Object when someone is actively hiding from you. A natural 10 rolls again and adds, a natural 1 rolls again and subtracts. Difficulty bands: The standard ladder runs 9 for easy, 13 for medium, 15 for hard, 17 for formidable, and 21 for extreme. Spotting an obvious tail is near the bottom, catching a professional surveillance team sits near the top.

Tips and playstyle

Best for: Everyone. There is no role in Night City that is better off missing the thing about to kill them. Character concepts: A Media who reads a room before entering it, a Lawman working a scene, a Solo running point, a Fixer who notices which of their guests came armed. Synergies: It directly opposes Stealth and Conceal/Reveal Object. Tracking follows what Perception first noticed, Human Perception reads the people rather than the room, and Concentration keeps you observant while under fire.

Frequently asked questions

Does the GM roll Perception for me?

Often, and in secret, so that a failure feels like an empty room rather than a missed roll. Ask how your GM handles it, because it changes how much a quiet scene should reassure you.

How much Perception should I buy?

More than you think. Skills cap at 6 at creation, and even a support character wants 3 or 4 so that ordinary DVs of 9 and 13 are reliably within reach.

Does cyberoptics replace the skill?

No. Optical implants can add specific capabilities such as low-light or zoom, but noticing and interpreting is still the skill roll. Chrome also costs Humanity from your EMP times 10 pool.
