Overview
Education is broad general knowledge: history, geography, politics, corporate structures, the sort of background a person picks up from schooling or from reading widely. In Night City that education might have come from a corporate academy or from a decade of reading whatever was available, and the skill does not care which. At the table Education is the default knowledge roll. When a player asks whether their character would know something and no specialized skill covers it, this is what the GM calls for. That makes it quietly one of the most frequently used skills in an investigation-heavy campaign, and one of the most obviously absent when nobody in the crew has taken it.
How it works
Linked Stat: INT Category: Education Resolution: 1d10 plus INT plus skill level against a DV set by how obscure the fact is. Common knowledge sits around 9, specialist background around 15, and genuinely rarefied material toward 21. A natural 10 adds a further roll, a natural 1 subtracts one. Scope: Education answers what you already know. Looking something up is Library Search, technical fields belong to Science, and one specific neighborhood belongs to Local Expert. Education is what fills the gaps between them.
Tips and playstyle
Best for: Any crew that solves problems by understanding them, and any character written as having been to school. Character concepts: A corporate analyst, a Media with a research background, a Netrunner who read everything, an Exec who knows which regulator owns which file. Synergies: Library Search finds what Education does not already contain. Science covers technical questions in depth, Local Expert covers one district, and Language lets you use knowledge that was not written for you.
Frequently asked questions
When does the GM call for Education?
Whenever you want to know something and no more specific skill applies: a historical event, a corporate structure, a political relationship. It is the default fallback knowledge roll.
Education or Library Search?
Education is what you already carry in your head, available immediately. Library Search is research, which takes time and access but reaches far beyond what any one person memorized.
Is Education worth points for a combat character?
A rank or two, yes. It costs little and it is the difference between recognizing a corporate logo on the vehicles arriving and having no idea who just showed up.
