Overview
Human Perception is the skill for reading people rather than rooms. It tells you that the client is frightened rather than annoyed, that the contact has already decided to sell you, that the person across the table is repeating a story they were given rather than one they lived. It is the only social skill keyed to EMP, which makes it the odd one out in a stat that heavy cyberware eats away at. That is deliberate: a character who chromes themselves toward maximum combat capacity gets progressively worse at understanding the people they are dealing with. At the table it is the crew's early warning system for betrayal, and the reason a Fixer walks out of a meeting they were supposed to die in.
How it works
Linked Stat: EMP Category: Social Resolution: 1d10 plus EMP plus skill level, usually opposed by the target's Acting or their relevant social skill when they are actively lying. A natural 10 rolls again and adds; a natural 1 rolls again and subtracts. The Humanity link: EMP is capped at 8 and cyberware reduces your Humanity, which starts at EMP times 10. Characters who install a great deal of chrome tend to lose ground here, so the crew's best reader of people is rarely its most heavily augmented member.
Tips and playstyle
Best for: Fixers, Medias, Execs, and anyone who negotiates for a living or expects to be lied to regularly. Character concepts: A Fixer who has survived by knowing who is about to turn, a Medtech reading a patient's real symptoms, a Media working a reluctant source. Synergies: Conversation draws people out and this reads what comes back. Persuasion and Interrogation both work far better once you know what the target wants, and Lip Reading extends the same instinct across a room.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from Perception?
Perception is INT-based awareness of the environment: ambushes, details, surveillance. Human Perception is EMP-based reading of people. Two separate skills, two different questions, and both worth having.
Does cyberware hurt this skill?
Indirectly but seriously. Implants cost Humanity, which starts at EMP times 10, and heavy chrome pushes EMP down. A low EMP character can still buy ranks, but the stat half of the roll shrinks.
Can it tell me exactly what someone is hiding?
No. It tells you that something is off and roughly what the emotion is. Finding out what the lie covers is what Interrogation, Conversation, and legwork are for.
