Overview
Tasking is the technomancer's version of summoning. Compiling calls a sprite into being for a few tasks, registering binds one for longer service, and decompiling tears apart a sprite somebody else is running. Sprites do the work a decker would need hardware and time for: attacking icons, masking traces, hunting data, and standing between you and a counter-intrusion. They are also proof of what you are, which is why every use is a risk in a world where corporations pay bounties for Emerged talent.
How it works
Linked Attribute: Resonance Dice Pool: Resonance plus Tasking, counting 5s and 6s as hits. Requires Resonance: Technomancers only. Resonance runs 0 to 6 and sits at 0 for everyone else. Cost: Compiling and registering push back at the technomancer, the Resonance counterpart to a magician's drain.
Tips and playstyle
Best for: Technomancers exclusively. No other path can roll it at all. Character concepts: An Emerged teenager hiding from corporate recruiters, a data broker whose sprites do the searching, a technomancer raised inside a research program. Synergies: Cracking is the intrusion work sprites assist with, and Electronics keeps the mundane gear around you working.
Frequently asked questions
Can a decker use Tasking?
No. It rolls on Resonance, which only a technomancer has, so a decker's rating in it would be zero dice.
How do sprites compare to spirits?
They fill the same role on the Matrix side. Sprites are compiled with Resonance and act on icons and devices rather than the physical world.
