Overview

Insight is reading a person: what they are feeling, what they want, and whether the story they are telling matches either. It covers catching a lie, noticing that someone is terrified rather than hostile, and understanding why a Kindred with every advantage is still making a bad deal. At the table it is the counter to every liar in the setting, and the setting is full of them. It is also a hunting skill. Choosing a vessel means judging who is drunk, who is lonely, who will be missed, and who is going to fight, and that judgment is Insight before it is anything else.

How it works

Common Rolls:

  • Wits + Insight: Detecting lies, reading emotions
  • Intelligence + Insight: Understanding motivations
  • Composure + Insight: Maintaining objectivity while reading someone Opposed By: Manipulation plus Subterfuge when someone is lying to you, rolled against your result rather than a set difficulty. Specialties: Detecting Lies, Emotions, Motivations, Kindred, Mortals

Tips and playstyle

Character Concepts: Therapist, interrogator, con artist who works both sides, hostage negotiator, a Malkavian who reads people accurately and cannot explain how. Synergies: Auspex confirms what Insight suspects and reads emotional resonance directly. Subterfuge is the opposed skill, so a social specialist usually wants both at similar ratings. Worth Knowing: Insight is the defensive social skill. In a court full of liars, a coterie with nobody rolling it will be worked steadily and never know it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Insight tell me exactly what someone is thinking?

No. It tells you emotional state and whether something rings false. Mind reading is Auspex, and even that gives impressions rather than transcripts.

Can I use Insight on another vampire?

Yes, and it is harder. Kindred have had decades of practice at composure, and a specialty in Kindred is worth taking if your chronicle is political.

Does Insight help me pick a vessel?

Yes. Reading who is isolated, distracted, or already frightened is how a careful predator avoids the vessel who fights back or the one somebody will report missing.
