Overview

Leadership is the ability to make a group function: giving orders people follow, keeping a crowd from panicking, organizing a plan that survives contact with the people carrying it out. It is different from persuading one person, because a group has its own momentum and someone in it always disagrees. For Kindred it is the skill that runs coteries, gangs, congregations, and barony politics. Anarch characters need it most, since the Movement has fewer formal titles and more arguments to win. It also governs your retainers and herd on the nights they need direction rather than money, which is most nights that matter.

How it works

Common Rolls:

  • Charisma + Leadership: Inspiring followers
  • Manipulation + Leadership: Organizing groups
  • Composure + Leadership: Maintaining authority under pressure Scale: Leadership addresses groups rather than individuals. Convincing one person is Persuasion; holding twenty of them together while something goes wrong is this. Specialties: Inspiring, Commanding, Organizing, Military, Corporate, Kindred

Tips and playstyle

Character Concepts: Officer, union organizer, gang leader, cult founder, an Anarch baron who has to re-earn the room every month. Synergies: Presence makes people want to follow you, Status makes the authority official, and the Herd and Retainers backgrounds give you an actual group to lead rather than a theoretical one. Worth Knowing: Leadership pays off across whole chronicles rather than in single scenes, since what it buys is an organization that keeps working while your character is asleep.

Frequently asked questions

How is Leadership different from Persuasion?

Persuasion works on a person and an argument. Leadership works on a group and a direction, and it is what keeps them moving once the arguing is over.

Do I need Leadership to run a coterie?

Not mechanically, since players decide for their own characters. It matters when the coterie commands ghouls, mortals, or a gang, which is where the rolls happen.

Does Leadership work on Kindred?

Yes, with a specialty, and it is harder. Vampires follow power and self-interest, so leading them usually means demonstrating both before the roll is made.
