Encounters for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition

Building scenes that challenge without stalling. 5e encounters land when terrain, stakes, and enemy roles vary. CR is a budget, not a guarantee, and bounded accuracy means a CR-1 brute can still hurt level-10 PCs if it hits.

Checklist

  • Mix enemy roles: brute, controller, skirmisher, leader, not 4 of the same statblock.
  • Use terrain that creates decisions (cover, elevation, hazards, chokepoints).
  • State the failure condition before the fight, not the enemy HP totals.
  • Cap rounds at ~5: if the outcome is clear, end the scene before it grinds.
Common pitfalls
  • Single-statblock waves
  • Open rooms with no terrain
  • HP bloat instead of more dangerous tactics

Keep sessions moving

Use quick pages, then get back to the scene.
