Overview

The Lawyer owns Law, which starts at 5 percent and sits on almost no other occupation list here. Bought high, it covers what the police can and cannot legally do, how to read a will, whether a search will stand up, and how to get a client out of a cell before the scenario's clock runs out. Beyond the courtroom the Lawyer is a records specialist. Library Use at base 20 percent, Accounting at 5 percent, and Psychology at 10 percent make deeds, probate files, corporate filings, and the person lying across the desk all tractable. Credit Rating 30 to 80 buys a respectable office and an assumption of competence, which is frequently what gets the door open.

How it works

Occupation Skills: Accounting, Law, Library Use, Persuade, Psychology, Language, Credit Rating Credit Rating: 30-80% Skill Points: EDU × 4 (spent only on the occupation skills listed above) Typical Equipment: Office and filing cabinets, letterhead that gets replies, a clerk who does the tedious searching, courthouse and registry access, contacts among judges, police, and rival firms

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Groups that keep getting arrested, campaigns built on inheritances, land, and corporations, players who prefer leverage to violence. Playstyle: Law and Persuade are the core buys, with Library Use close behind. Accounting at base 5 percent earns real points in any scenario where money moves, because following the payments is often faster than following the cult. You have no combat or stealth skill at all, so put Personal Interest points (INT × 2) into Dodge or Spot Hidden. Character Concepts: Estate attorney handling a strange bequest, defense lawyer with underworld clients, corporate counsel who found something in the books, small-town practice holding every family secret, prosecutor who lost a case they should have won.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Law skill let me do?

Know the rules and the procedure: whether evidence was obtained legally, what a document binds someone to, how to file for access to a sealed record, and what the police must do before they can hold your friend. It starts at 5 percent, so it only works if you buy it up.

Is a Lawyer good at interrogation?

Within limits. Psychology at base 10 percent reads the witness and Persuade at base 10 percent works when you have time and standing. Neither Intimidate nor Fast Talk is on the list, so the Lawyer wins slowly rather than by pressure.

How does a high Credit Rating change play?

Between 30 and 80 you have an office, a reputation, and the ability to hire people. In practice that means you can pay a private investigator, post bail, and be treated as a professional by officials who would stonewall everyone else at the table.
