Overview

The Librarian has the shortest occupation list in this system and the most focused one. Library Use starts at 20 percent and is the skill the occupation exists to maximize, with Occult at 5 percent and Spot Hidden at 25 percent alongside it, which is exactly the trio that turns a stack of documents into a lead worth following. The Librarian is also the character who knows what the collection holds before anyone searches it, including which books were donated, which are missing, and who has been requesting them. Credit Rating 9 to 35 is modest, so the real asset is access: entry after hours, interlibrary requests, and a professional reason to handle a book that nobody sensible should touch.

How it works

Occupation Skills: Accounting, Language, Library Use, Occult, Spot Hidden, Credit Rating Credit Rating: 9-35% Skill Points: EDU × 4 (spent only on the occupation skills listed above) Typical Equipment: Keys to the stacks, catalogs and finding aids, interlibrary loan privileges, correspondence with other collections, a request slip you filed under someone else's name

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Research-first investigators, parties chasing tomes, players who like being the one who already knows where the answer is shelved. Playstyle: Take Library Use as high as creation allows, since most Keepers cap creation skills near 75 percent, and put the next tranche into Occult. Choose an extra Language deliberately, because Language (Other) starts at 1 percent and half the useful sources are not in English. Spot Hidden at base 25 percent covers the physical half of the job: the removed page, the annotation in the margin, the hollow binding. Character Concepts: University reference librarian, cataloger for a private collector, archivist at a historical society, rare-books clerk with a key, small-town librarian who noticed a pattern in the borrowing record.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Librarian just a weaker Antiquarian?

No. The Antiquarian trades books for objects, with Appraise, Art/Craft, and History and a Credit Rating of 30 to 70. The Librarian is narrower, poorer at 9 to 35, and better at the one thing the game asks for most: finding the right source inside a collection.

How does Occult help a Librarian?

Occult starts at 5 percent and tells you what a book is claiming and whether the tradition behind it is genuine. It is not Cthulhu Mythos, which starts at 0 percent and rises only through terrible experience, but it sorts real dangerous texts from Victorian nonsense.

What do I do in a scene with no library?

Spot Hidden at base 25 percent is your field skill, and Accounting at 5 percent handles ledgers and account books, which turn up far more often than reading rooms. Buy Persuade or Listen with Personal Interest points (INT × 2) if you want to carry interviews too.
