Overview

Dwarves build things meant to outlast them: tunnels, halls, feuds, and reputations. They live in the mountains and under them, they take craft seriously, and they are famously difficult to move once they have decided something. In Daggerheart they are neighbors and colleagues rather than a distant kingdom, so a Dwarf adventurer usually has a workshop, a clan, or a creditor somewhere waiting on news. Mechanically the Dwarf is the damage-soaking ancestry. One feature converts the lightest hits into Stress instead of lost Hit Points, and the other lets you spend Hope to halve a physical attack that would otherwise hurt. Both are decisions made in the moment rather than passive bonuses, so playing a Dwarf well means watching your Stress track and your Hope as closely as your Hit Points.

Tips and playstyle

Best Classes: Guardian (a front line that refuses to fall), Warrior (Strength alongside damage reduction), Seraph (conviction that survives the counterattack), Druid (stone and earth as an easy fit). Character Concepts: Master smith, mountain sentinel, mine foreman, travelling toolmaker, grudge-carrying exile, a brewer who took the road chasing one good barley field. Why Choose Dwarf: Take Dwarf when you intend to be hit. Thick Skin turns chip damage into a resource you already manage, and Increased Fortitude answers the single heavy attack that would otherwise end your night.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thick Skin always the right call?

No, and that is what makes it interesting. Trading a Hit Point for 2 Stress is excellent while your Stress track is empty and dangerous when it is nearly full, since filling every Stress slot triggers a breakdown.

Can Dwarves be spellcasters?

Yes. Nothing in the ancestry restricts class, and a Dwarf Wizard studying runework cut into stone or a Dwarf Sorcerer with a volcanic bloodline both work. Damage reduction is just as welcome on a caster who keeps getting caught in melee.

Are Dwarves always grim?

That is a stereotype rather than a rule. Daggerheart Dwarves can be warm, funny, or endlessly curious. The steadfast part is that whatever they are, they stay that way under pressure.
