Overview

Fighters are the most versatile martial class, skilled with every weapon and armor. They learn specialized fighting styles and gain more ability score improvements than any other class. Whether wielding a greatsword, a bow, or sword and shield, Fighters are reliable and effective combatants. Fighter characters are straightforward and powerful. Action Surge gives them an additional action once per rest, and Extra Attack (up to 4 attacks at level 20) makes them devastating in sustained combat. The Champion subclass (SRD) enhances critical hits and athletics, rewarding consistent fighting.

How it works

Hit Die: d10 Primary Ability: Strength or Dexterity Saving Throws: Strength, Constitution Fighting Style: Choose one at level 1 (Archery, Defense, Dueling, Great Weapon Fighting, Protection, Two-Weapon Fighting). Second Wind: Bonus action to heal 1d10 + Fighter level. Once per short rest. Action Surge: Take one additional action on your turn. Once per short rest (twice at level 17). Extra Attack: 2 attacks at level 5, 3 at level 11, 4 at level 20. Champion (SRD): Improved Critical (crit on 19-20, then 18-20 at level 15), Remarkable Athlete (half proficiency to STR/DEX/CON checks), Additional Fighting Style.

Tips and playstyle

Character Concepts: Knight, mercenary, gladiator, soldier, bodyguard, duelist, archer, retired general. Playstyle: Fighters are reliable damage dealers who never run out of resources. Action Surge on key turns is devastating. Champions are simple but effective, critting more often especially with multiple attacks. Synergies: Great Weapon Master or Sharpshooter feats are excellent thanks to multiple attacks. Extra ASIs let Fighters max abilities and take feats. Action Surge pairs amazingly with multiclass spellcasting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Champion too simple compared to other subclasses?

Champion is mechanically simpler, yes, but that's a feature, not a bug. It's perfect for new players or those who want a reliable, no-nonsense fighter. Improved Critical becomes very powerful with 3-4 attacks per turn.

How does Action Surge work?

On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action and bonus action. This means you could attack twice (with Extra Attack that's 4+ attacks in one turn), or cast a spell and attack. Recharges on short rest.
