Overview

Brag is the art of the big claim: recounting the dragon you nearly killed, naming the lords who owe you favors, promising what you will do to the next person who draws steel. It is a Presence skill because it works through force of personality, not evidence. It comes up in taverns, before duels, at negotiations where reputation matters, and whenever the party needs to look more dangerous or more connected than it is.

How it works

Characteristic: Presence. Skill group: Presence skills. Test: 2d10 + Presence; 11 or lower is tier 1, 12 to 16 tier 2, 17 or higher tier 3. Training grants a benefit and unlocks attempts untrained heroes cannot make. How it is used: Tier 3 makes listeners believe and react, whether with awe, drinks, or a hasty withdrawal. Tier 2 earns grudging respect. Tier 1 is met with laughter or a challenge to prove it. Edges and banes: A real reputation, visible trophies, or a friendly crowd grants an edge (+2). A skeptical audience, a known rival present, or an obviously empty boast imposes a bane (-2).

Tips and playstyle

Best for: Heroes who want to be talked about, and parties that use reputation as a shield. Character concepts: Gladiator career crowd favorite, Troubadour who narrates their own legend, hakaan whose size backs the story. Synergies: Intimidate when the boast turns into a threat, Perform for staging the tale, Gather Rumors to learn what a crowd already believes about you.

Frequently asked questions

How is Brag different from Lie?

Brag is about you and is allowed to be exaggerated; listeners expect it. Lie is a specific false claim meant to pass as fact.

Does Brag work in a negotiation?

Yes. The Director may let a strong Brag shift an NPC's impression of the party before the formal arguments begin.
