Overview
Finance is understanding money as a system rather than as cash: investments, markets, corporate structures, property, and the specialized art of moving funds so that nobody can follow them. It also runs in reverse, which is often more useful: reading someone else's accounts and working out who pays them. Kindred need this more than most supernatural creatures, because immortality is a financial problem. Assets have to survive owners who never age, income has to arrive without a living person collecting it, and a haven bought in 1930 has to stay legally owned by someone. Ventrue built a clan reputation on solving that, and every elder with real Resources has someone doing it for them.
How it works
Common Rolls:
- Intelligence + Finance: Investment analysis, accounting
- Manipulation + Finance: Negotiating deals, hiding money
- Wits + Finance: Quick financial assessments Interaction: Finance is how the Resources background grows, survives an investigation, or gets quietly rebuilt after a rival ruins it. Specialties: Investments, Banking, Corporate Finance, Money Laundering, Cryptocurrency, Real Estate
Tips and playstyle
Character Concepts: Accountant, fund manager, launderer, property developer, a Ventrue who has been compounding the same portfolio since the railways. Synergies: Resources is what Finance protects and grows, Politics tells you which money is politically dangerous to touch, and Technology covers the systems modern money lives in. Worth Knowing: Finance is slow. It rewards chronicles with downtime between stories, where a season of quiet work can change what your character can afford to attempt.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Finance if I have high Resources?
Not to spend, but to keep. Resources without Finance is money someone else manages, which makes it a target for a rival with an accountant and patience.
How does a vampire hold property legally?
Through trusts, shell companies, and a Mask that gets renewed. That paperwork is a Finance problem, and letting it lapse is how elders lose havens they owned for a century.
Can Finance be used offensively?
Yes, and it is one of the safest attacks in the game. Freezing a rival's accounts or exposing their laundering hurts them without a single Masquerade risk.
