Overview

Prime is magic examining itself: Quintessence, resonance, and the energy every other Sphere spends. It is what lets a mage create rather than merely rearrange, which makes it the partner Sphere for conjuring matter, producing real fire, and healing damage that burned something out of a pattern. The Celestial Chorus hold Prime as their specialty and read that raw energy as divine. In play Prime is the least visible Sphere and the one experienced players buy early. A single dot shows you who else in the room is Awakened and whether an object is enchanted, which is often the most valuable information available. Higher ranks let you charge your own effects and pass energy to allies. Quintessence and Paradox both run from 0 to 20 on the sheet, and Prime is the Sphere that manages the first of them.

How it works

Level 1: See magical energy: active effects, enchanted items, other Awakened, and the resonance clinging to them Level 2: Channel raw energy into brief effects and put a magical edge on a weapon Level 3: Store and spend Quintessence properly, fuel other Spheres, and create genuine patterns rather than borrowed ones Level 4: Expand and reinforce existing patterns, and withdraw the energy that holds one together Level 5: Alter patterns at the level of raw magic, including making and unmaking Nodes

Tips and playstyle

Best For: Any mage who wants to create rather than reshape, and every cabal's counter-magic specialist. Celestial Chorus take it as their Tradition specialty. Synergies: Forces for fire and light that are real rather than redirected, Matter to conjure objects instead of transmuting them, Life for damage other Spheres cannot mend, Spirit for work on the far side of the Gauntlet.

Frequently asked questions

Is a single dot of Prime worth spending?

For most builds, yes. Rank 1 tells you whether the person opposite you is Awakened, whether an item is enchanted, and whether an effect is still running, and that regularly decides how a scene goes.

Why do people say Prime is mandatory?

Because creation needs it. Forces can redirect a fire but needs Prime to make one, and Matter reshapes objects but needs Prime to conjure them. Anything that adds to the world rather than moving it around usually wants Prime alongside.

What is Quintessence for?

It is the fuel Prime manages, tracked from 0 to 20 on your sheet and drawn from Nodes and Tass. Rank 3 is where you can store and spend it deliberately instead of merely sensing it.
