Character creation checklist in Draw Steel

Follow a step-by-step flow so you don’t miss key choices during creation. Use the links below to apply the workflow in Draw Steel and keep it consistent across sessions.

Workflow (do this first)

  1. Write the concept in one sentence before opening the sheet.
  2. Follow the system’s creation order, distribution rules and caps matter.
  3. Reserve any final-pass / freebie / bonus points for the gaps the concept needs.
  4. Sanity-check derived stats (HP, Willpower, Sanity, Stamina) before session 1.
Roll loop reminder (Draw Steel)

Draw Steel resolves actions with power rolls: 2d10 plus a characteristic, read against outcome tiers rather than pass/fail, tier 1 (11 or less), tier 2 (12-16), and tier 3 (17+). Even low tiers usually do something; higher tiers do it better.

Example: 2d10 + Might 2 totalling 15 lands tier 2: the attack hits with its middle effect line.

Key facts

  • 2d10 Power Roll with 3 tiers: Tier 1 (≤11), Tier 2 (12-16), Tier 3 (17+)
  • 9 classes: Censor, Conduit, Elementalist, Fury, Null, Shadow, Tactician, Talent, Troubadour
  • 12 ancestries: Devil, Dragon Knight, Dwarf, Hakaan, High Elf, Human, Wode Elf, and more
  • 5 characteristics: Might, Agility, Reason, Intuition, Presence
  • Edge & bane system: one edge is +2, one bane is -2; a double edge or bane shifts the tier instead of stacking further
  • Kit system: Equipment loadouts that define your combat style

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Starting with optimized stats and reverse-engineering a concept. Fix: Concept first, math second, produces a character you actually want to play.
  • Mistake: Skipping the final-pass step. Fix: Final pass closes the gap between mechanics and concept, half a character without it.
