Forgetting XP spends in Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition
Track changes over time so you can always explain what you bought and why. Use the links below to apply the workflow in Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition and keep it consistent across sessions.
Workflow (do this first)
- Log XP gained at session end, amount plus source (session award, milestone, downtime training).
- When you spend, record both the rating change AND the in-fiction reason for it.
- Save the entry with a timestamp so the GM can audit history later.
- Mark a rollback flag while you’re unsure, easier to reverse than to reconstruct.
Roll loop reminder (Hunter)
Hunter H5 uses d10 dice pools: roll Attribute + Skill, count successes on 6+, with criticals on paired 10s. Desperation dice add power when the cell is stretched thin, and risk overreach or despair.
Example: A success driven by Desperation dice gets you there, but the danger to the cell escalates.
Key facts
- 5 Creeds: Entrepreneurial, Faithful, Inquisitive, Martial, Underground
- Edge system: supernatural-adjacent abilities, some drawing on Desperation dice
- Desperation and Danger: a shared cell resource and the escalating threat pushing against it
- Cell system: Hunters work in groups for safety
- Monster hunting focus: Investigate, prepare, hunt
- Human vulnerability: Still human, powerful but fragile
Common mistakes
- Mistake: Spending XP in your head and updating dots later. Fix: Log the spend the moment the GM approves it; an unsourced dot is an audit failure.
- Mistake: Tracking totals but not what each spend bought. Fix: Every spend gets a one-line reason, "raised Athletics to 3 after the rooftop chase."
Context (system overview)
Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition is a tabletop RPG where you play as ordinary humans who've encountered the supernatural and joined the Vigil, hunting the monsters that prey on the innocent. As part of a cell, you manage Edges, track Desperation and Danger, and work together to protect the innocent.
