Overview

Paladins are holy warriors bound by a sacred oath. They combine martial prowess with divine spellcasting, channeling their conviction into supernatural power. A Paladin's oath defines their mission and grants unique abilities, making them among the most versatile combatants. Paladin characters are excellent front-line fighters with healing and support capabilities. Divine Smite lets them convert spell slots into devastating burst damage, and their Aura of Protection boosts the saving throws of nearby allies. The Oath of Devotion (SRD) focuses on honor, courage, and protecting the innocent.

How it works

Hit Die: d10 Primary Ability: Strength and Charisma Saving Throws: Wisdom, Charisma Spellcasting: Half caster using Charisma. Prepares spells. Up to 5th level slots. Divine Smite: When you hit with a melee weapon, expend a spell slot to deal extra radiant damage (2d8 for 1st level, +1d8 per slot level above 1st, max 5d8). Extra 1d8 vs undead/fiends. Lay on Hands: Pool of healing = Paladin level × 5. Touch to heal or cure disease/poison (5 points per condition). Aura of Protection: You and allies within 10 feet add your CHA modifier to all saving throws (level 6+). Oath of Devotion (SRD): Sacred Weapon (add CHA to attacks), Turn the Unholy, Aura of Devotion (immunity to charm).

Tips and playstyle

Character Concepts: Holy knight, crusader, oath-bound protector, temple guardian, reformed criminal, divine avenger. Playstyle: Paladins are nova damage kings. Save spell slots for Divine Smite on critical hits (doubled dice!). Aura of Protection is one of the best features in the game. Use Lay on Hands for efficient emergency healing. Synergies: CHA benefits spellcasting, Aura, and Sacred Weapon. Great Weapon Master works well with smite criticals. Multiclassing into Sorcerer or Warlock adds more smite fuel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I Smite on every attack?

You can, but you'll burn through spell slots quickly. Save smites for critical hits (the extra dice are doubled) or when you need to burst down a dangerous enemy. Paladins have limited spell slots as half casters.

What happens if I break my oath?

This is up to your DM. The rules suggest atonement or, in extreme cases, becoming an Oathbreaker (DMG). Many DMs treat minor infractions as roleplay opportunities rather than mechanical penalties.
