Overview

Sorcerers carry a magical birthright conferred upon them by an exotic bloodline, some otherworldly influence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces. Unlike Wizards who study magic, Sorcerers feel it in their blood and can manipulate spells through Metamagic. Sorcerer characters are powerful blasters and controllers who can modify their spells on the fly. With Metamagic options like Twinned Spell and Quickened Spell, they can do things no other caster can. The Draconic Bloodline (SRD) grants extra HP, natural armor, and eventually damage bonuses tied to a dragon ancestor.

How it works

Hit Die: d6 Primary Ability: Charisma Saving Throws: Constitution, Charisma Spellcasting: Full caster using Charisma. Learns spells (limited known). Up to 9th level slots. Sorcery Points: Points equal to Sorcerer level. Spend on Metamagic or convert to/from spell slots. Metamagic: Modify spells (choose from): Careful (protect allies from AoE), Distant (double range), Empowered (reroll damage), Extended (double duration), Heightened (disadvantage on save), Quickened (cast as bonus action), Subtle (no components), Twinned (target two creatures). Draconic Bloodline (SRD): Draconic Resilience (extra HP per level, AC 13 + DEX unarmored), Elemental Affinity (add CHA to damage of ancestry type), Dragon Wings (fly speed at level 14).

Tips and playstyle

Character Concepts: Dragon descendant, storm-touched, wild magic vessel, noble with hidden power, street urchin with arcane talent. Playstyle: Sorcerers have fewer spells known than Wizards but can bend them with Metamagic. Twinned Haste on two martials is gamechanging. Quickened Fireball + cantrip gives amazing burst damage. Choose spells carefully since you know so few. Synergies: Twinned Spell on single-target buffs (Haste, Greater Invisibility) is incredibly efficient. Quickened Spell lets you cast a leveled spell and a cantrip in one turn. Subtle Spell makes Counterspell uncounterable.

Frequently asked questions

How does Metamagic work?

You learn 2 Metamagic options at level 3 (more later). When casting a spell, spend Sorcery Points to apply a Metamagic option. You can only use one Metamagic per spell (with some exceptions). Points recharge on long rest.

Sorcerer vs Wizard: which is better?

Different strengths. Wizards know more spells and can prepare flexibly. Sorcerers have fewer spells but Metamagic lets them modify spells in ways Wizards can't. Sorcerers also have CON save proficiency (better for concentration).
