Overview
Insight is the Wisdom skill for reading people: catching the flicker of a lie, sensing that a merchant is scared of someone, or guessing what a rival will do next. It comes up in negotiations, interrogations, and any scene where an NPC might be more than they seem. It also protects the party from Deception, which it opposes.
How it works
Ability: Wisdom Common checks: Determining an NPC's true intentions, detecting a lie, predicting someone's next move from body language and speech. Contests: Insight opposes Deception. When you are not actively watching, the GM may use your passive Insight (10 plus your modifier, plus 5 with advantage or minus 5 with disadvantage). What it reveals: A success tells you whether someone seems truthful or is holding something back. It does not read minds or reveal what the truth is. Proficiency: On the lists for Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, and Wizard, plus the Acolyte background.
Tips and playstyle
Best for: Clerics, Druids, Monks, and Paladins, who already invest in Wisdom, and any party face who needs to know when a deal is sour. Character concepts: Confessor, detective, poker player, diplomat's aide, veteran interrogator. Synergies: Pairs with Persuasion to press the right argument and with Perception to notice both what people say and what they do.
Frequently asked questions
If I beat their Deception, do I learn the truth?
You learn that they are being deceptive. Finding out what happened is up to further roleplay, Investigation, or magic.
Can I use Insight on the GM's plot?
Insight reads a specific person in front of you. It will not tell you whether a quest is a trap, but it can tell you the quest giver looks nervous.
