Overview

Perception is the Wisdom skill for awareness: hearing footsteps behind the door, seeing the archer on the roof, smelling smoke before the fire is visible. It decides who gets surprised. It comes up in exploration, on watch, and in every encounter where something is trying to stay unseen. Its passive form works constantly in the background, which is why GMs ask for your passive Perception at session one.

How it works

Ability: Wisdom Common checks: Noticing hidden creatures, overhearing conversations, spotting tracks or traps in plain sight, keeping watch on a long rest. Passive Perception: 10 plus your Wisdom modifier plus proficiency bonus if proficient, plus 5 with advantage or minus 5 with disadvantage. The GM compares it against Stealth checks and hidden object DCs without you rolling. Contests: Hidden creatures roll Dexterity (Stealth) against your passive Perception or an active check. Senses: Darkness, fog, and heavy obscurement impose disadvantage or make sight-based checks impossible; darkvision helps but does not remove all penalties.

Tips and playstyle

Best for: Everyone. Clerics, Druids, Rangers, and Monks get it cheapest because Wisdom is already high. Character concepts: Scout, sentry, hunter, lookout, suspicious bodyguard. Synergies: Pairs with Stealth for a scout and with Investigation for a full search. Expertise in Perception makes a Rogue almost impossible to ambush.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to roll if my passive Perception is high?

The GM uses passive Perception for things you would notice while doing something else. An active roll can still be asked for when you deliberately search.

Why is Perception considered the best skill?

It is checked constantly and losing the check means being surprised, which can cost the party a whole round. Few skills affect combat that directly.
