Overview
Stealth is the Dexterity skill for not being noticed: slipping past a sleeping guard, scouting the camp ahead, or ducking behind a pillar so the next attack comes from an unseen position. It comes up in infiltration, ambushes, and every time the party wants to surprise rather than be surprised. Group checks decide whether the whole party gets in unseen or the clanking Paladin gives everyone away.
How it works
Ability: Dexterity Contests: A Stealth check is compared to the Wisdom (Perception) check or passive Perception of each creature that might notice you. Hiding: You cannot hide while a creature can see you clearly; you need cover, obscurement, or a distraction. Attacking or making noise reveals you. Armor: Some medium armor and all heavy armor impose disadvantage on Stealth checks. Check the armor's Stealth column. Group checks: When the party sneaks together, everyone rolls; if at least half succeed, the group succeeds. Unseen attackers: Attacking from hiding gives advantage on the attack roll, which also enables Sneak Attack.
Tips and playstyle
Best for: Rogues, Rangers, and Monks. Any Dexterity character without heavy armor should consider it. Character concepts: Scout, assassin, burglar, poacher, spy, survivalist hiding from a hunting party. Synergies: Pass without trace adds a huge bonus and fixes group checks. Pairs with Perception for a scout and with Sleight of Hand for a thief.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hide in combat?
Yes, with the Hide action, if something blocks the enemy's view of you. Rogues can do it as a bonus action with Cunning Action.
Does darkvision let enemies see me hiding in the dark?
Darkvision treats darkness as dim light, so you are lightly obscured, not hidden. You need heavy obscurement, cover, or a wall to hide.
