Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition merit

Prestigious Sire

Prestigious Sire is a merit in Vampire V5: your sire is respected, so their name opens doors and sets expectations.

Overview

Prestigious Sire means the vampire who made you is somebody. A Primogen, a famous artist, a baron whose word settled a war, an elder whose age alone commands deference. You inherit none of their power and all of their reputation, which in Kindred society is a real asset: doors open, introductions happen, and an insult aimed at you is an insult aimed at them. The catch is that it works in both directions. You are watched more closely than an unremarkable neonate, judged against a standard you did not set, and expected to behave like your sire's childe in rooms where that is inconvenient. Play the merit as a set of obligations that happen to be useful.

How it works

Effect: Bonus dice on Social rolls with Kindred who respect your sire, and access to audiences and introductions that an unconnected neonate would be refused. Drawback: Your failures reflect on your sire. Scandals can cost you the merit, cost your sire standing, and turn a patron into an enemy. Cost: Recorded as a single merit on the RPG Stack sheet; after creation, merits are bought at the new dot times 3 XP rate listed in this system's advancement table. Synergies: Multiplies the Status and Mawla backgrounds, since a respected lineage makes both easier to claim and easier to keep. It is the direct opposite of the Infamous Sire flaw and the two cannot be held together.

Tips and playstyle

Character concepts: Favored childe, political heir, reluctant legacy, ambitious neonate trading on a name they resent, orphan of a destroyed elder. When to take: Take it in political chronicles, especially if your coterie has no other route into court. Decide up front whether your sire is alive, in torpor, or dead, because that changes what the name buys.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my sire is destroyed?

The merit usually survives as inherited legacy rather than active patronage. Doors still open on the name, but nobody is going to intervene on your behalf.

Does this give me Status?

No. Status is a separate background representing your own standing. Prestigious Sire gives you a borrowed reputation, which is a good start toward Status but not the same thing.

Can I take this and Infamous Sire together?

No. They describe opposite reputations for the same person. If your sire is admired in one sect and hated in another, pick the one that matters in your chronicle.
