Overview

Survival is the Wisdom skill for staying alive outdoors: following a wounded owlbear through the brush, finding a safe campsite, predicting the storm, and navigating without a road. Nature knows the wilderness; Survival lives in it. It comes up during overland travel, in pursuit scenes, and in any campaign where getting lost or going hungry is a real threat.

How it works

Ability: Wisdom Common checks: Following tracks, hunting and foraging, guiding the party through frozen wastes or trackless forest, identifying signs of nearby creatures, predicting weather, avoiding natural hazards such as quicksand. Typical DCs: 10 to track a group across soft ground, 15 across rocky terrain or after rain, 20 or more for a single careful creature days later. Navigation: The party's navigator makes Survival checks to avoid becoming lost; the DC depends on the terrain and visibility. Rangers: In favored terrain, a Ranger doubles proficiency on Survival checks and finds twice as much food while foraging.

Tips and playstyle

Best for: Rangers, Druids, and Barbarians, whose Wisdom and class lists both support it. Character concepts: Tracker, trapper, nomad, caravan guide, shipwreck survivor, wilderness guide. Synergies: Pairs with Nature for knowledge plus practice and with Perception for spotting what the tracks lead to. Animal Handling covers the beasts you meet on the way.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I follow a trail?

The GM may call for a new check when conditions change, such as crossing a river or after heavy rain. A quarry that hides its tracks raises the DC.

Does Survival replace rations?

Foraging yields food and water on a successful check, but it takes time and depends on the terrain. Deserts and tundra may offer nothing.
