Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition drive

Greed

Greed is a drive in Hunter H5: Drive of the hunter who realized that monsters accumulate wealth and cannot report a theft.

Overview

Greed hunts for profit. Monsters hoard money, property, artifacts, and leverage, and none of it is protected by anything a victim could take to the police, which makes the supernatural the single best-defended and worst-policed target in the world. A Greed hunter noticed that and never stopped noticing. It is an honest Drive for a horror game, because it explains why somebody keeps doing something this dangerous without pretending to be a hero. The friction comes fast: the cell wants to burn the house down and you want three hours inside it first. Playing Greed well means letting the money genuinely tempt you on camera.

How it works

Tested When: There is something valuable in the room and no time to take it, when the score requires leaving someone behind, or when a third party offers you more than your cell can. Desperation: Losing the score triggers it. Desperation runs 1 to 5 and adds dice to attribute plus skill pools on ten sided dice, where each 6 or higher is a success. Despair: Rolling a 1 on a Desperation die on a failed roll causes Despair, and Desperation dice stay unavailable until your Drive redeems you. Redemption: For Greed, redemption arrives with the score: taking something of real value from the supernatural, or converting a haul into the equipment that keeps your cell alive.

Tips and playstyle

Best for: Heist-shaped chronicles, morally gray cells, and players who want a motivation that creates conflict inside the group rather than only outside it. Character concepts: A thief who broke into the wrong estate, an insurance investigator who saw the real claim, a fence who started sourcing inventory directly. Synergies: The Entrepreneurial creed turns the haul into an operating budget, and the Artifact Edge is the reward this Drive is always reaching for. Spend background dots on Resources and Contacts so your gains stay usable.

Frequently asked questions

Is Greed a villain Drive?

No, it is a motive. A Greed hunter still kills monsters and still saves people, they just expect to be paid for it, and the character stays sympathetic as long as the cell is not what they steal from.

Will my Storyteller punish Greed?

They will test it, which is the point. Expect offers, bribes, and hauls you can only take by accepting a real risk, and expect those choices to become your Desperation trigger.
