Overview
Vengeance starts with a specific loss: a person, a home, a life that a monster ended. Everything afterward is aimed at the thing that did it, and at anything close enough to it to count. It is the most immediately playable Drive in the game, because the hunter's motivation is fixed the moment you write the name of who they lost. It is also the Drive most likely to cost the cell its judgment. A Vengeance hunter takes the shot early and treats the plan as negotiable the instant the target is in sight. Touchstones matter more here than anywhere: they are the human connections that argue against the hunter who finishes the job at any price.
How it works
Tested When: The target is in reach and the cell wants to withdraw, when mercy would be the tactical choice, or when revenge requires hurting someone who was not responsible. Desperation: Watching the target get away is this Drive's trigger. Desperation rates 1 to 5 and adds dice to an attribute plus skill pool on ten sided dice, counting 6 and higher as successes. Despair: A 1 on a Desperation die on a failed roll drops you into Despair, and the dice stay gone until you redeem yourself through your Drive. Redemption: For Vengeance, redemption means the Hunt striking home: landing a real blow on what took from you, or protecting someone else from suffering the same loss.
Tips and playstyle
Best for: Players who want their motivation settled in one sentence, and chronicles with a recurring antagonist the Storyteller intends to keep alive for a while. Character concepts: A parent whose child never came home, a firefighter who was the only survivor of a call, a detective whose partner's death was filed as an accident. Synergies: The Martial creed matches the aggression and the Arsenal Edge keeps the cell armed for the confrontation you keep pushing toward. Write Touchstones who will say no to you.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when my hunter finally gets their revenge?
The Drive has to change or the character is finished. Most tables either widen the target, since the creature had allies and a network, or move the hunter to a new Drive such as Oath or Atonement.
Does Vengeance mean my hunter ignores the plan?
It means the plan is under constant pressure. Play the pull rather than the ruin: argue for the aggressive option, take it when the scene allows, and let the Storyteller use those choices as your Desperation trigger.
