Overview
Pride is the Drive of hunters who find the existence of monsters personally unacceptable. Not frightening, not tragic: offensive. The world belongs to people, and every creature that feeds on people is a claim to the contrary that this hunter intends to disprove one body at a time. That conviction makes a Pride hunter the one who walks toward what everyone else is running from, which is as useful and as dangerous as it sounds. The Drive resists retreat and takes badly to being outclassed. Pride hunters break not when they are scared but when they are beaten, because the Drive has no story for a monster that is better.
How it works
Tested When: Something proves stronger than you, when the sensible option is running, or when you are asked to accept a supernatural entity as an ally instead of a target. Desperation: Being outmatched is the trigger. Desperation rates 1 to 5 and adds dice to attribute plus skill pools on ten sided dice, with 6 and higher scoring successes and pairs of 10 counting as a critical. Despair: A 1 on a Desperation die on a failed roll drops you into Despair, and you lose Desperation dice until you redeem yourself through your Drive. Redemption: Pride redeems through proof: beating something that beat you, or standing between a monster and a person and winning where the outcome was genuinely in doubt.
Tips and playstyle
Best for: Front line characters, cells that need someone willing to hold a door, and players who want a Drive that pushes toward confrontation. Character concepts: A retired boxer who fought something in an alley and lived, a veteran who refuses to be afraid twice, a community leader who will not let her neighborhood be prey. Synergies: The Martial creed is the obvious fit and Thwart the Unnatural answers powers Pride cannot punch. Put your single attribute 4 somewhere that wins fights, since this Drive will find them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Pride and Vengeance?
Vengeance is about a specific loss and a specific target. Pride has no wound behind it, only a refusal, so a Pride hunter fights a creature that never personally touched them as hard as one that did.
Does Pride mean my hunter is arrogant?
Not necessarily toward people. The Drive is defiance aimed at the supernatural, which can read as quiet stubbornness just as easily as as swagger, and the quiet version survives longer.
How does a Pride hunter handle retreat?
Badly, and that is the mechanical point: being forced to withdraw or being outmatched is a natural Desperation trigger for this Drive, which is when the extra dice and the risk of Despair both arrive.
